DIY Solar Eclipse Viewers

On August 21, nature will dish out some awesomeness. If you haven’t heard – A total solar eclipse will sweep across the U.S. While the Triangle area of North Carolina is not in the “totality” zone, we will experience the moon cover about 90% of the sun. The solar eclipse is going to be spectacular. Here are some “do it yourself” projects to help you and your kiddos safely observe the eclipse.

 

Begins:                                           Monday, August 21 at 1:16 p.m.

Maximum (90% coverage):        Monday, August 21 at 2:44 p.m.

Ends:                                               Monday, August 21 at 4:06 p.m.

You don’t need fancy glasses or equipment to enjoy the eclipse. Just a few simple supplies from around your home will let you safely observe the awesome phenomenon.

 

Disclaimer: NEVER look directly at the sun without protective equipment specifically designed for looking at the sun. The DIY viewers below are not meant to allow you to look directly at the sun, rather these projectors help you observe the shadow of the eclipse. It is not safe to look directly at the sun during any part of the eclipse; you could severely damage your eyes or even go blind. Sunglasses do not offer appropriate protection.

 

DIY Eclipse Viewers:

 

  1. Pinhole Camera – Materials Needed: 2 pieces of white card stock, aluminum foil, tape, pin or paper clip, scissors

 

  1.  Pinhole Box Projector – Materials Needed: Cardboard Box, a sheet of white paper, aluminum foil, tape, scissors, pen, pin or paper clip.

 

  1.  Tube Viewer – Materials Needed: wrapping paper tube or long paper towel tube, aluminum foil, scissors, pushpin, white paper, tape

 

  1. Find some shadows or make some shadows – You can use your hand to create a pinhole viewer or lace your fingers to create shadows or just find a tree casting shadows on a building or the ground.

Get your kids outside to view the eclipse! It is going to be AWESOME. And please BE SAFE. You should never look directly at the sun.
